Nicola, the wine and the vineyard #35

Thirty-fifth page of my journal. I'll tell you about our May: focus on the vineyard with the management of the greenery and the fantastic evolutionary path of the new plantations. At the bottom of this article the section: "What to drink". Every month, I tell you which bottle I would open!

IN THE VINEYARD: GREEN MANAGEMENT

IN THE VINEYARD: GREEN MANAGEMENT
This month all the work was concentrated in the vineyard. We spent much of our time managing the greenery, with particular attention to suckering - the elimination of unproductive shoots under the bank wire. But we didn't stop there! We also worked on relevage combing of all the new shoots, directing them inside the double pair of wires to guarantee perfect geometry and symmetry of the plants. In short, we moved like spinning tops from one point of the vineyard to another!

The image of the month? The development of the vegetative apex, the highest part of the plant. Many shoots have already passed the double high wire and are beyond the pole. Now that the sun has returned, vegetative growth is greatly stimulated and the plants are in excellent health.

FLOWERING AND TREATMENTS

We are in full bloom! On Civine and Sabadina we are slightly further behind, while on Campiani east, Campiani west and Cudula the flowering is advanced and we are already towards fruit set in some bunches. Everything is going great! We managed to manage the humidity and the danger of downy mildew, for which it is the most critical time of the year.

So far we have done five treatments, with a copper metal dose of less than a kilogram, around 700 grams per hectare – very low doses considering the conditions of the year. Thanks to the peculiarities of our hills and their climatic value, the plants are healthier without the need for heavy interventions. Precise agronomic management, combined with our unique terroir, has allowed us to maintain very low doses of copper metal, promoting plant growth and stimulating their immune defenses. Working in a unique terroir like Gussago is simply fantastic!

NEW PLANTINGS

This year, with the rains and the total availability of water in the soil, the plantations benefit greatly. For larger plants there are more phytosanitary difficulties, but the new plantations – like Civine and the new Chardonnay plant, the two new terraces planted in January – are developing magnificently. The new Pinot Blanc vineyard near the winery is also experiencing exceptional development.

The plantations of last year's expansion of Cru Campiani Est are following a fantastic evolutionary path. We have selected, by working on a single shoot that is developing well, what will be the fruit of the following year. This climate, which brings great vigor, favors the organic development of small plants, following an accelerated process thanks to the availability of water. Let us always remember that water is life, for better or for worse.

WHAT TO DRINK?

Right now, i would open:

🍾 CUVÉE NATURE DISGORGING MARch 23

Why? Here you are...
The abundant year of evolution has given it a truly remarkable harmony. In its great simplicity, this bottle demonstrates how important it was to take this step.
